Book synopsis.

= The book ‘Anne of Green Gables’ tells the story of a red-haired orphan girl named Anne Shirley. This book tells the story of Anne Shirley; a young, imaginative and enthusiastic girl who was accidentally or mistakenly sent to a brother and sister pair named Matthew Cuthbert and Marilla Cuthbert. They both live in Green Gables, Avonlea, on Prince Edward Island. They wanted a boy to help them with housework and take care of their farm. But instead of getting a boy, they got Anne Shirley.Anne quickly wins the heart of Matthew Cuthbert (Marilla Cuthbert’s younger brother) despite knowing that Anne was sent by mistake. Marilla was initially stubborn and wanted to exchange Anne, however, her heart melted for her sister and finally accepted Anne. Anne tends to get into trouble because of her imaginative nature and speaking as she pleases. She is stubborn and has strong opinions that are sometimes difficult for the people of Avonlea to accept. Anne quickly befriends her neighbor, a girl named Diana Barry and experiences the joys and trials of growing up in a small community.Throughout the novel, Anne faces various challenges including conflict with her academic rival, Gilbert Blythe; adapting to her new home and trying to adjust to school. She also dreams of becoming a teacher and writer, she is very ambitious. Anne studied hard so she could enter a good university. Then she received a scholarship to pursue higher education. However, because Matthew died, Anne finally decided to accompany Marilla who was alone and finally decided to become a teacher at Green Gables. But the job of teacher at the Green Gables school was assigned to Gilbert Blythe. However, when Gilbert Blythe heard the news that Anne was not going out, he gave his position to Anne knowing that Anne wanted to become a teacher. And then they became friends and forgot their past.

Book analysis

Characters

  • Anne Shirley. (The main character.)= Anne is often shown with fiery red hair, which is her trademark. Her hair is described as long, thick, and wavy, like the color of carrots. Her eyes are usually said to be large, expressive, and green in color. She had very pale white skin and also wild freckles scattered over her face. Her appearance is also determined by her body, which is described as thin. Even though her clothes were simple and unstylish, Anne sometimes gave them beautiful details, such as small flowers, so that they looked much more ‘alive’.

  • Matthew Cuthbert. (Supporting characters.)= Matthew looks tall, but he’s starting to stoop a little after years of hard work on the farm. His face shows signs of aging from working in the sun (i.e., deep lines around his eyes and mouth).  People often said his eyes were soft and sad at the same time, and his once fiery red hair was now a soft gray with a hint of his original color peeking out from under his old straw hat. His attire was kept simple, with worn work clothes and sturdy boots.

  • Marilla Cuthbert. (Supporting character)= Marilla Cuthbert has a strong, tough build, showing that she has serious strength. She always stood straight. Her face is sharp and serious-looking, with high cheekbones, a sharp nose, and a strong jawline that makes her look stern. Her hair is usually described as iron gray, and she always pulls it back very tightly into a bun at the back of her neck, as if she doesn’t like fancy hairstyles or anything. Her clothes were just a simple dark dress that looked a bit old and pathetic.

  • Diana Barry. (Supporting character)= Diana was always known for her hair because it was so black that people nicknamed her ‘the raven’. Her hair fell over her shoulders; pretty and well maintained. Her eyes are doe-like with a deep blue color and long, dark eyelashes that frame them. Diana has radiant skin and rosy cheeks that make her look young and full of energy. Her features are very soft and feminine, with slightly curved lips, making her look like she is always smiling. In terms of clothing, Diana liked to wear pastel-colored dresses with lace and ribbons, which further added to her feminine charm. And of course the clothes are always classy and stylish.

  • Gilbert Blythe. (Supporting character)= Gilbert Blythe is a character known for his good looks. He is often depicted as having messy, dark, and wavy hair. His eyes are described as dark brown. Average height; slightly taller than Anne. Gilbert’s skin is described as healthy and bright. He has well-defined features with a strong jawline and a straight nose, which enhances his extremely handsome (I REPEAT EXTREMELY HANDSOME) appearance. In terms of clothing, Gilbert usually wears neat clothes to show his status as a respected member of society. Her clothes are often simple, practical, yet stylish.
  • Storyline.

= The storyline that made me very excited and finally deepened the story further was when Diana Barry’s mother, Mrs. Barry, however, did not allow Anne to see Diana again because Anne accidentally gave Diana a drink of (alcoholic) wine, mistaking it for raspberry juice, and sent Diana home drunk. Mrs. Barry, even though Anne had given Mrs. Barry an explanation, still didn’t want Diana to see Anne again. But one day when Mr. and Mrs. Barry goes out of town and leaves Diana’s sister with Diana at home, alone. Diana’s sister had a serious flu, and in the end Diana was forced to ask Anne and Matthew for help (for they are the nearest neighbor that Diana had), and then Anne saved Diana’s sister’s life. The doctor said, “If only Anne didn’t give Diana’s sister herbal drink before I came, then her sister was finished.” And because of that incident, Mrs. Barry finally realized how kind Anne was, and then allowed Diana to be friends with Anne again.

    After effect

= After reading this work, I felt like trying new things. Because you see the main character in this work, Anne, who sees the world very imaginatively, and she finds lots of happy memories because she likes trying new things. So I’m inspired, to see the world with new eyes and enjoy trying challenging things!

    Language style.

= The language style in this book is very standard. Because this book was published in 1908. So the use of English in this book is classic English.

    Book theme

= The theme of the book Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is about friendship, family, home and imagination (Literally made that up but that sums it)

    Evaluation

= Anne of Green Gables is a book that tells the story of the ups and downs of a girl who wants to achieve her dreams. This book teaches us to have a wild imagination and live in the moment happily even though life sometimes feels unfair. That way, after reading this novel you will get lots of alternatives to live life to the fullest, by loving all its gloom and all its smiles. Also so that we don’t give up on achieving our goals and keep holding onto our dreams tightlyHowever, this book has a few shortcomings. Unlike the series (the netflix series that was uh so so good), which is very good, and shows in detail how women of Anne’s age struggle and also how Anne really loves poetry; invites his girl friends to love the world of art, poetry and literacy and also how it empowers women. The book was lacking of it.But anyway! This novel is still recommended to buy and embrace! Especially by you, little Kartini who is growing up.(Lets talk about Kartini later on in this website’s journey (to any of you guys that don’t know her) love)
